For my 30th birthday myself, my husband and my parents went down to London for the day and along with a bit of shopping (it was my birthday after all!), went for lunch at the 2 Michelin star restaurant, Marcus at The Berkeley.
We chose the ‘Taste of Winter’ tasting menu, and also opted for the Sommelier’s Selection wine pairings, with a glass of dessert wine added at the end. Below is the menu we had – although it states 5 courses, when you add on the chefs amuses’ and my birthday dessert, we actually ended up with 9 different dishes plus a sweet treat to take home!
Sourdough bread & salty butter
Savoury bon bon
Little gem with crab
Onion consomme, pasta, parmesan
Hen egg, truffle, cep – this was my favourite dish!
Roasted turbot, Jersey royal, fresh garlic
Chargrilled Cumbrian veal rump, pomme puree, Pommery mustard
Chocolate orange, Tahitian vanilla
‘Nutmeg & custard’
And because it was my birthday (and we obviously needed more food…), the wonderful staff brought out a gorgeous chocolatey caramel dessert – with a candle no less!
The whole lunch lasted about 3 hours – the museum we were going to go to had closed before we finished so that will have to be a trip for another day! – but it was so relaxed and worth every minute, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Although this is a 2 Michelin star restaurant, it was not stuffy and the staff really gauged the feel of the table well, ensuring the everyone felt at ease and able to ask questions but also to have a bit of a giggle with them too!
I must also add that my mum has an allergy to wheat, and the chef & staff were so helpful in substituting any dishes that contained wheat. She did comment that it was the best gluten free bread she’d ever tasted!
Definitely worth a visit for a special occasion!
